Is PRP effective for treating hair loss?

The process

Platelet-rich plasma or PRP, is a treatment that encourages healing and growth at the cellular level. PRP was first used medically to accelerate the healing of wounds and prevent infection. Over the past decade, PRP has been used for a growing number of treatments, including: hair restoration, skin rejuvenation, arthritis, ligament repair, and the reduction of scars.

The first step in the PRP treatment process starts by collecting a small amount of the patient’s blood. Next, the blood is spun in a centrifuge, which causes it to separate into three distinct parts: red blood cells, platelet poor plasma, and platelet rich plasma.

Platelets are cells that naturally assist your body in healing and generating new tissue. Platelets also contain growth factors, which are involved in stem cell migration, and ultimately activate, rejuvenate and regenerate cells throughout the body.

The platelet-rich plasma is extracted from the tube and is strategically injected into the desired treatment areas. Studies suggest that growth factors released from platelets act on stem cells in hair follicles to stimulate the development of new follicles and promote the development of new blood vessels.1 Interactions between stem cells in hair follicles, germinative cells in the skin, and growth factors activate cells to naturally stimulate hair growth and generation.2

The Results

One study, which followed 11 patients who received 4 PRP treatments over the course of two months, showed

PRP was able to stop hair loss in over 80% of participants.

Photographic analysis showed an improvement in hair volume and coverage, and

the average number of hair follicles increased by over 30%.1

Another study followed 23 patients over the course of 2 years to determine initial effectiveness of the treatment, as well as evaluate long-term success. Patients received 3 PRP treatments, 30 days apart. Three months after the first treatment, treated areas showed a

38% increase in hair count and a 28% increase in hair density.

Untreated, control, areas showed a decrease in both hair count and hair density.

One year after the final treatment, the restorative effects of the PRP treatments on hair count and density remained evident in 19 of the 23 patients treated.2

A third study followed 20 patients for one year. Participants in this study initially received 3 PRP treatments at an interval of three weeks. At 6 months, participants received a booster treatment. Researchers determined the level of hair loss with a hair pull test, which shows how many loose hairs can easily be pulled from the scalp. They also measured hair density and patient satisfaction. At the onset of the study, the hair pull test showed a high level of hair loss for all patients. 6 weeks after the initial three treatments, patients exhibited a normal level of hair loss during the hair pull test. Three months after the initial treatment,

hair density was increased by an average of 18% in participants.

Research from this study suggests that patients may see a lesser degree of restoration over time; so, a quarterly or semi-annual treatment regimen may help patients maintain optimal results.3

The Advantages

PRP has been clinically shown to be an effective way to stop hair loss and promote hair restoration. Since PRP therapy uses your body’s own biology and healing process instead of foreign chemicals or drugs, patients have reported little-to-no side effects aside from temporary pain that may be noticed during the treatment at injection sites. In contrast, oral and topical medications like minoxidil and finasteride can cause dizziness, tiredness, impotence, loss of sexual drive, and headaches. In comparison to surgical treatments, like hair transplants, a PRP treatment plan has virtually no downtime, less discomfort, and a lower cost.

Other considerations

Hair loss is different for everyone. Work with a doctor you trust to determine what restoration method is right for you. Depending on the condition of your hair and scalp, and your ultimate goals, your doctor can help you determine the treatment that is right for you. In order to realize the full effects of the treatment, you will want to determine a treatment regimen with your doctor beforehand, and be sure that the therapy works for your budget and schedule. The number, frequency and cost of treatments your doctor recommends will be determined by the current condition of your hair and your ultimate goal. In addition to being used as a standalone therapy, PRP has also been utilized to encourage the success of traditional hair transplant procedures or augment the effect of oral and topical medications.
